Kivalliq Hall added to list of schools eligible for the Independant Assessment Process (IAP)

November 2, 2018

Kivalliq Hall, a residential school that operated in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, has been added to the list of schools eligible under the Independent Assessment Process. The school was formally added to the IAP when the Nunavut Court of Appeal upheld a lower court decision to add the school to the IAP, and the decision was not appealed.

Kivalliq Hall was operated by the NWT territorial government as a residence for students leaving their home community to attend high school at the Keewatin Region Education Centre in Rankin Inlet from 1985 to 1995. There were about 225 students who lived at the residence who may be eligible to file a claim under the IAP.

The Court has yet to issue an order establishing the deadline for applications to the IAP or any of the other terms for applicants.

Further details will be available on the Secretariat’s website once the order is received, likely early in 2019.
